General Overview
We are seeking a dedicated Pharmacy Technician II to join our collaborative interprofessional clinical care team. In this role, you will work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, care managers, behavioral health providers, and clinical pharmacists to support our patients' needs. You will operate in a remote or office setting under the guidance of a clinical pharmacist and the Pharmacy Technician & Prior Authorization Manager.
Key Responsibilities
Prescription Management: Review and authorize prescription refill requests using our electronic medical record system, ensuring compliance with our protocols and provider preferences.
Prior Authorization Support: Assist support staff in completing prior authorization requests on behalf of our healthcare providers.
Communication Liaison: Act as a bridge between providers, insurance companies, and pharmacies to facilitate timely access to medications for our patients.
Patient Interaction: Occasionally reach out to patients via phone to discuss their medication needs.
Required Qualifications
Licensing: Must be licensed as a Pharmacy Technician II in Rhode Island.
Certification: Successful completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the Institute for Certification of Pharmacy Technicians "ExCPT" examination.
Experience: A minimum of 3 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician II is strongly preferred, including familiarity with prior authorization processes and medication refill requests.
Knowledge & Skills:
Comprehensive understanding of the refill renewal process and insurance prior authorization from a pharmacy perspective.
Familiarity with basic medical terminology and prescription sig codes.
Basic knowledge of common medications for various conditions (e.g., heart health, blood pressure, mood).
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience communicating with healthcare providers preferred.
Proficiency in database systems and the Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with electronic medical records, especially eClinicalWorks, is a plus.

Physical Environment
The role involves moderate physical activity, including walking and standing. There may be potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other biohazards, necessitating adherence to standard precautions.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time position (40 hours per week), with the possibility of part-time status as agreed upon with management.
Communication Skills
We value exceptional oral and written communication skills, with proficiency in applicable medical terminology. Bilingual capabilities in Spanish or Laotian are a plus, as are strong interpersonal skills.
Confidentiality
You will have access to medical records and must maintain confidentiality at all times.
Significant Job Functions
Review and authorize medication refill requests from patients and pharmacies using the electronic health record.
Complete the medication prior authorization process for healthcare providers.
Provide services at all primary care locations.
Assist providers with questions related to medication refill and prior authorization processes.
Interact with University of Rhode Island PharmD students, offering guidance on medication refill processes.
