Role Overview

As a Nurse Consultant you will determine medical eligibility of applicants and provide prior authorization of services to families of participants with serious, chronic medical conditions to obtain medical treatment related to the participant's medical condition. You will provide consultation to local agencies and interpret Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) program policies to participants, families, providers, and the public. This position offers 2 days of remote work each work week (15 total hours). 

 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $47,320.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Review audit reports of the Medical Review Teams and the Independent Professional Review Teams. 
  • Make judgments regarding hospital or nursing home patients’ level of care. 
  • Assess appeal documentation in cases of changes of level of care recommended by the review teams. 
  • Assess provider compliance in following state and federal regulations. 
  • Make decisions for medical necessity of admission to nursing homes and hospital under supervision of doctor. 
  • Audit necessity of ancillary services to recipients, considering physician orders for services and realistic goals and lengths of time to achieve these goals. 
  • Cooperate with county caseworkers in controlling drug abuse. 
  • Work with Medical Director and Fiscal Agent in limiting drug cases for persons who are known to over-utilize drug services.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Registered Nurse license (active within state of Indiana). 
  • Strongly prefer at least one (1) year of pediatric RN experience. 
  • Specialized knowledge of the Indiana Medicaid Program including federal and state laws. 
  • Specialized knowledge of nursing principles. 
  • Specialized knowledge of medical services provided through Medicaid. 
  • Must be committed to the public health mission of protecting the health, safety, rights, and privacy of program participants and their families. 
  • Working knowledge of medical diagnoses with their symptoms. 
  • Working knowledge of drugs, side effects and compatibility. 
  • Working knowledge of therapeutic and rehabilitative services. 
  • Ability to recognize realistic limitations of services provided. 
  • Ability to be flexible and to prioritize in complex situations. 
  • Effectively utilize professional communication skills. 
  • Ability to master computer-based data systems. 
  • Ability to maintain cooperative work relationships.
