About the Job The minimum compensation for this position is
$63,000.
This position is required to be in person on the University of Minnesota Morris campus in Morris, Minnesota.
For
newer graduates, clinical supervision will be offered.
Morris Student Counseling supports students' mental health, self-awareness,
skill building, and well being for success in college and in life. Student Counseling staff are key collaborators in creating a safe,
caring, respectful and inclusive campus that cultivates student learning, health, well being, persistence, and success. The Counselor
provides individual and group counseling, crisis response, consultation on mental health issues, and coordination of projects and programs
that foster student health and well being. This is 100% time, 12 month annually renewable professional and administrative appointment
(Mental Health Care Provider 1 9724M1). The position reports to the Senior Counselor.
For candidates with relevant expertise, the
position may include a joint appointment in Native American Student Success providing direct counseling and wellbeing resources for Native
American students. UMN Morris is federally recognized as a Native American-Serving Nontribal Institution - the only NASNTI university in the
upper Midwest; Just 1-2% of college students in Minnesota and nationally, over 300 Native American students comprise about 30% of the UMN
Morris student body, Most Native students are from Dakota and Anishinaabe Nations, with 70 Tribal Nations, Alaska Native Villages, and First
Nations represented on campus.
Responsibilities: 1. Provide culturally sensitive mental health care and resources
for a diverse student population and help to operationalize Student Counseling developmental, clinical and preventative
missions.
- The developmental mission - helping students enhance their personal growth. (Developmental interventions help students
acclimate to and benefit from the academic environment...by encouraging positive and realistic self-appraisal, intellectual development,
appropriate personal and occupational choices, the ability to relate meaningfully and mutually with others, and the capacity to engage
effectively in a satisfying life.)
- The clinical mission - recognizing that some students experience significant mental health
challenges (ranging from serious adjustment issues to more severe psychological disorders that require immediate professional attention
including diagnosis, treatment, and crisis response.)
- The preventative mission - anticipating environmental conditions and
development processes that may negatively influence student's well-being and initiating interventions that promote personal adjustment and
growth.

2. Provide
individual and group counseling to students seeking assistance and skill building for greater emotional and mental health.
3. Assess and
implement appropriate, evidenced based interventions based on the mental health needs of assigned students. Provide needed referrals and
case management support.
4. Provide crisis intervention and counseling to students during and after office hours.
5. Provide
consultation to students, faculty, and staff on a wide range of mental health issues.
6. Guide and support educational and preventative
programs that advance student learning, growth, development, and success and create a campus environment that fosters student well
being.
7. Maintain an understanding of UMM critical incident/crisis response protocols. Provide crisis response and support to students,
faculty, staff and others during and after incidents.
8. Implement effective practices, protocols, and record keeping in compliance with
HIPAA, FERPA, and other federal, state and university mandates, policies, and procedures.
9. Participate in professional organizations,
conferences and workshops; stay abreast of current clinical practice, strategies and developments, emerging issues, and approaches to
fostering college student health and well being.
10. Assist with Student Counseling data tracking, program assessment, evaluation and
improvement.
11. Collaborate with the Student Affairs, student counseling staff, other individuals, offices, committees and programs both
within and outside the university to implement a Student Counseling program that provides intentional student education and development;
partners with campus programs for seamless student services and experiences; builds community and fosters a healthy campus environment;
supports the recruitment, success, persistence, and graduation of a talented student body; advances the mission and vision of the college,
and moves Student Counseling to a position of leadership among US public liberal arts colleges.
Essential knowledge, skills and
abilities
* A master's degree in counseling, counseling psychology, social work or related field with four years experience, including at
least a year of direct college/community mental health counseling experience.
* Demonstrated skill and ability to develop effective
counseling relationships with clients; ability and willingness to provide group counseling as needed and requested by students; skill and
willingness to provide crisis response to students as needed, both during and after office hours.
* Ability to offer and support mental
health projects and programming.
* A demonstrated commitment to working effectively with people from diverse populations and the ability
to support the development of a welcoming, inclusive campus community.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
* Licensure as a
Professional Counselor or other appropriate mental health professional.
* Demonstrated knowledge of human growth and development issues
unique to college student populations.
* Experience working with American Indian communities, communities of color, LGBTQIA2S
communities, people with disabilities, low-income families, first generation college students, and/or International
students.
