Job Description

Dr. Elizabeth North, based at the UMCES Horn Point Laboratory , invites applications for a Graduate Research Assistant (MS or PhD) to contribute to an innovative program that explores the impact of harmful algae, temperature, and low dissolved oxygen on the West Florida Shelf. The objective of the graduate student’s research will be to predict the influence of climate change on the habitat volume of living resources on the West Florida Shelf. This research will involve conducting a literature review of fish and shellfish physiological tolerances, adapting and running the HabVol model, and determining which species and Marine Protected Areas may be most impacted by climate change. This position provides an outstanding opportunity for a student to develop skills in high-performance computing, visualization, and science in support of fisheries management using software tools like Fortran, R and Python.

Key Information

  • Start Date: January, 2025
  • Location: Horn Point Laboratory in Cambridge, Maryland . The lab is located on more than 800 acres on the banks of the Choptank River providing a beautiful natural setting for conducting world-class environmental research.

Qualifications

Minimum: BA, BS, or MS in biology, ecology, environmental science, fisheries or wildlife science, or a related field. Proficiency in reading scientific literature.

Preferred: Experience in computer modeling and proficiency in computer programs like Fortran, R, and/or Python.

Position Benefits

  • The annual stipend is approximately $34,681, with benefits and tuition included.
  • Support is guaranteed for 2.5 years. Opportunities for additional funding exist through research and teaching assistantships at Horn Point Laboratory.

Program Information
Successful candidates will enroll through the Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Sciences (MEES) graduate program at the University of Maryland College Park. While the student's location will be at the Horn Point Laboratory, graduate classes are offered in person and virtually by professors across the MEES program.
