Job Description:
The Emergency Vehicle Operator (EVO) role is an entry-level position that provides service as an EMS Driver. Ideal candidates have a good attitude, willingness to learn, and drive to serve the community.
The primary responsibility of an EVO is to ensure safe and timely transportation of a patient to and from 911 scenes and medical facilities. This may also include assisting with basic medical assistance and the provision of life support measures required to stabilize ill or injured patients. This position will primarily serve populations in Jackson, AL; however, EVOs are expected to respond and transport throughout the service area. 

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must be at least 21 years of age
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Clean driving record over the past 3 years
  • No major traffic accidents in the past 5 years
  • Healthcare or rescue service background (Preferred)
  • Pre-existing BLS-CPR license
  • The desire, eligibility, and ability to obtain Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and licensure within 1-year from date of hire (paid by company).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Knowledge of appropriate safety equipment when exposure to infectious organisms, agents, and toxic chemicals 
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors, as well as onboard personal, and clinics
  • Critical thinking skills with the ability to evaluate and interpret information and make decisions with a partner once trained
  • Ability to remain calm during stressful situations
Physical Demands
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 150 lbs. independently, more with assistance
  • Ability to repeatedly twist, squat, stoop, bend, grasp, use fine hand coordination, push, and pull
  • Ability to work in a confined and mobile environment
 

Essential functions and duties:

  • Safely operate an emergency vehicle
  • Assess the safety and hazards at the scene of an emergency
  • Control the hazards at an emergency scene as trained and directed
  • Lift and move patients.
  • Maintain the condition of the emergency response vehicle, aircraft, or vessel
  • Maintain, clean, and restock emergency supplies and equipment
  • Operate a variety of types of equipment including: computer, calculator, cardiac monitor, other medical equipment, etc.
  • Openly communicate with the public (patient, patient’s friends and family, etc.), government (police, utilities, etc.), and private sector (doctors, nurses, etc.) in an effective and efficient manner conducive to excellent patient advocacy
  • Effectively interact with individuals, families, and patients from a diverse group of cultures and backgrounds
  • Evaluate and interpret information and make decisions with a partner
